A Word From Our President

TABS is more than just an organization, it is a family. i can safely say that i am who am today due to TABS and the National Federation of the Blind. It is my vision for this wonderful organization to serve as a beacon of hope. a source of strength and an avenue for guidance to those who seek it. TABS has done many wonderful things for many blind students and is is my duty to continue the great work of this organization, as well as push it onto new boundaries and heights we never thought were possible.
I can only accomplish this with the help of my very dedicated board, but most importantly, our members.
-Juan Del Rosario
Current TABS President

Declaration of Purpose

TABS is a membership organization devoted to the advancement of blind students of all ages. Since its inception in 1990, TABS has worked on multiple levels to encourage the equal participation of blind individuals in all functions of society. Through instructional seminars, state and national conventions, legislative action, social events, and literature, we strive to promote independence and self-advocacy. The organization operates as a whole under the principle that inside and outside the classroom blind students are fully capable of leading normal productive lives. In order to reinforce this belief, it is necessary to view the change within blind students themselves. Thus, our ongoing objective is to work in conjunction with the National Association of Blind Students (NABS) and to a larger extent with the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) to build a sturdy foundation of useful skills, solid confidence, and raw determination so that we may in turn show the public that blindness is not the limitation it is thought to be. In essence, the primary goal of TABS is to follow its parent organizations in changing what it means to be blind.

Our Philosophy

The Louisiana Center for the Blind believes in blind people! Our experience has taught us that blindness can be reduced to a mere inconvenience. With proper training, and opportunity (and these are important), the average blind person can lead a normal, independent and fulfilling life. In fact, thousands of blind people are doing just that! The Louisiana Center for the Blind is "changing what it means to be blind." We are helping to take the "dis" out of "disability."

The same philosophy is shared by the Colorado Center for the Blind, but do not let us tell you about it. Visit the Louisiana Center for the Blind and the Colorado Center for the Blind for detailed information about their various training programs.

The Scholarship Program

Both the NFB and the NFB of Texas offer scholarships for deserving high school and college students. For further details about these scholarships and other forms of financial aid resources on the Internet, and for information on finding and applying to college, Visit Our College Central.
